When hiring a nurse, it’s easy to get caught up in the clinical capabilities of your candidates and you forget you are talking with a person and not a skill set. Having clinical skills and medical knowledge is imperative in any good RN. In order to effectively enact those skills in a clinical environment, there are key soft skills necessary that are commonly found in the most successful nurses. In weeding through your top nurse candidates, look for nurses that embody these three soft skills

Communication

Your medical facility functions as a living organism. With constant ins and outs, twists and turns, your entire staff needs to be on the same page at all times. This requires consistent and effective communication and nurses are a large part of that.

Look for RN candidates that speak with clarity and confidence. Written notes and documentation will also play a key role in effective hospital communication. Keep an eye out for great writing skills in your nurse practitioner candidates as well.

Work Ethic

Does your RN candidate have a great track record of showing up to work consistently and on time? Have their references doted on how hard they worked during their shifts? A nurse can be as capable and knowledgeable as ever, but if he does not show up ready to work, you are better off hiring a different candidate.

Leadership

Emergencies can happen in the blink of an eye in a medical facility. Hospital staff need to be ready to take charge and effectively remediate the situation. A great leader can keep calm and calculated under pressure and multitask to effectively lead a team of medical staff while handling patients and their families.

Even in non-emergency situations, it’s important for a nursing hire to effectively give orders and command a room. Any sign of confusion or lack of confidence will be perceived by the patient and can give the entire hospital a bad reputation. Look for candidates who are natural born leaders or who know how to turn it on when they come to work.
