Relocating for a job can be one of the best decisions you ever make. Furthering your career and finding better financial stability can completely change your life and make any change worthwhile. That doesn’t mean it won’t come with its challenges. Deciding whether or not to relocate for a healthcare job is difficult and it gets exponentially more complicated if you have a family. There are so many factors to consider, but it all starts with finances.

Is it financially feasible?

If you are not receiving relocation assistance from your new company, will you be able to afford moving costs, a down payment and other miscellaneous expenses such as furniture, new license plates, etc.? How well do you know the housing market and the cost of living in this new city? If the numbers don’t add up, then it’s simply not meant to be.

Will you/your family be happy?

If you are moving from your RN job in L.A. to a higher-paying nurse practitioner job in D.C., will you be able to handle that big of a change in weather and lifestyle? Will the amenities in the new city mesh well with the hobbies of you and your family? Do you know anybody in the area in which you are considering moving to? How would this relocation affect your partner and their lifestyle and career? Don’t uproot your entire life just for a better title or salary if it means you and your family will be miserable otherwise.

Will the grass be greener?

Each relocation situation is so unique that there is no universal way to answer this question. In the end it comes down to what is possible and you and your family’s preferences. If it means more to have financial stability, then relocating for a higher-paying job makes sense. If family means the world to you and your significant other, then taking a medical assistant job far away from home would be unwise.

In any scenario it’s important to take into account what you are leaving behind. How stable is your current job? How important are the relationships you have developed in this community? Are you closer to family in your current location? Is the community safer than the potential relocation city? Don’t wait until it’s too late to start asking these questions. Do what you can to make sure that the grass will truly be greener in this new position.
